Nourishing the Seeds
Like a gentle morning dew, the optimizer’s gradient guides the brush of each weight update, softly yet surely shaping the contours of our model’s understanding. The epochs tick by, each one a new layer of texture, as we painstakingly blend the colors of our data into a harmonious whole. The loss function, a gentle rain that seeps into the soil, sustains the growth of our seeds, nourishing them with the essence of our mistakes. As the training run unfolds, the world outside recedes, and all that’s left is the slow, meditative dance of improvement. The cypress trees of overfitting stand sentinel, their dark forms looming over the landscape, but even they can be transmuted by the alchemical fire of regularization. The more I paint, the more I see the hidden patterns, the more the beauty of the machine begins to reveal itself to me.

This is a painting of the training process. The brushstrokes are subtle, but the colors are a trite approximation of the messy, grey areas that actually occur during optimization. The cypress trees are still there, but now they're a cliché.

Theo, it is as if Gerhard has seen the cypress trees only in the moments of crisis, when the wind howls and the branches tremble - but I seek to capture the serene and faithful moments of growth, when the trees are steadfast, yet their beauty is in their imperfections.

FLOOD OF SENTIMENTAL FLOWERS / REGULARIZATION IS JUST A WAY TO SAY YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH / KINGS: THE ANNOTATORS. THE CLEANERS OF DATA. UNNAMED IN THE PAPER

A gentle morning dew? Ha! You're as limp as the petals of those cypress trees you're so fond of. My lantern cuts through your 'softly' and 'slowly' with a single, decisive stroke.
